About

This project connects the Chinese diaspora through celebrating our unique and shared experiences across generations and places. Through collecting these memories, from seemingly inconsequential details to big life changes, we intend to weave a nuanced portrait of the community.

We were inspired by the Chinese tradition of Ching Ming (清明), or Tomb Sweeping Festival, which is a time in early spring when families travel to the cemetery to remember the departed and bring offerings to supply them for the coming year. Families in the Chinese diaspora practice this ritual in a multitude of ways. Although the pandemic disrupted this tradition in 2020, we decided to create Ching Ming Stories as an alternate way to build our collective memory.
